Comet Golf Society Guidelines

1. Title The title shall be the Comet Golf Society

2. Object To promote Golf and develop the Society for its members.

The Society shall be a member of the Golfing Union of Ireland and shall conduct its outings according to the Rules of Golf.

3. Membership Annual membership fees shall be reviewed at each AGM and the incoming Committee shall vote in new members at their first ordinary meeting.

Membership fees must be submitted to a committee member by the date of the first committee meeting announced at the AGM.

Existing members who fail to attend two outings may have to re-apply for membership.

Members, who fail to play any outings for 3 years in succession, shall have their application re-considered by the Committee.

Members are expected to dress and behave appropriately on the course and in the clubhouse. The Committee shall review the membership of any member who may cause the Society to be brought into disrepute.

All members must wear a shirt and tie for dinner on Captain and President’s days.

4. AGM The AGM shall be arranged at a time deemed suitable by the Society Committee

All motiond from the floor of the AGM must be proposed and seconded by members present at the AGM and moved by the proposer.

A proposer of the motion may speak for such period as shall be at the discretion of the Chairman of the meeting and shall have the right of reply before the motion is put to the meeting for a vote.

In exercising his right of reply, a proposer may not introduce new marerial. The seconder of a motion shall have time as shall be allowed by the Chairman to second the motion.

Members are entitled to speak on any such motion and must do so through the Chair. All speakers to any motion shall have time as shall be at the discretion of the Chairman. The Chairman shall have the absolute right to decide at any time when a motion has been sufficently discussed and may put the motion to the meeting giving the proposer the right of reply before doing so.

One half of the membership shall have the right to call an EGM

5. Committee
The Committee shall consist of Chairman, President, Secretary, Captain, Treasurer and Committee members and shall conduct the affairs of the Society in the best interest of the members.

The Handicap Committee shall be composed of members of the Committee


Handicap System
· The maximum handicap is 28 + 4 discretionary points
· 2 categories with 4 prizes in each category
· New Members receive h/cap of 16.
· New Members with a GUI h/cap receive 2/3 of their h/cap up to a max of 16 and all New Members handicaps are revised after 3 cards.
· Cuts = 2 shots overall, 1 Cat winner, . 5 other winners, .2 for nines
· Players 8 shots or more behind winner, get . 3 back
· .3 shots back for each attendance, awarded Pres & Captains day
· .2 shots deducted for each point scored over SS (36 pts)
· A member of the Society may be cut shots on observation

6. In order to avail of the considerable subsidy on the day of an outing, it's essential that members, in their own interest, continue to support the Society's fundraising activities throughout the year

All monies received on behalf of the Society, shall be lodged by the Treasurer, to the bank account approved by the Committee.

An annual financial report shall be made available to each member.

7. Outings Members must be in attendance for the time of draw. If a member arrives after the draw time they will not be allowed to play for any of the prizes. However, if they decided to take part in the outing, their score on the day will qualify for player of the year and matchplay qualification.

In the unlikely event of the bus being late for the draw, the above rule does not apply, as the bus is the official mode of transport.

The highest ranked 31 players after the first 3 outings i.e. (2 cards from 3) will qualify for the matchplay, along with the previous years matchplay winner, providing that member has played two of the 3 outings.

Matchplay ties will be forfeited by the home player (first player drawn out), if he fails to give his opponent 3 reasonable dates and venues for the match, at least one week in advance of the date the tie must be completed.

In matchplay, a players qualifying handicap will be honoured throughout the competition.

The winner of the Player of the year competition will be the player with the highest scoring 8 cards combined.

The team for the challange cup with the Beaumont House Society shall consist of 20 players and 2 subs. The first 18 will be selected using the palyer of the year table after the outing prior to the match. The Captain shall select two wildcards as the remaing two players for the team.

The provision of a bus for the outings shall be at the discretion of the Committee.


8. Complaints
If any Member has reason for complaint, about any aspect of the Comet Golf Society, or it’s Members, the complaint shall be put in writing and addressed to the Chairman of the Society. All complaints will be held in strictest confidence and the Committee’s decision shall be final.
